Zimmer Biomet automates consumable usage tracking
This enables them to access data to accurately measure production costs.
About Zimmer Biomet
Founded in Warsaw in 1927, Zimmer Biomet’s joint replacement technologies restore mobility, alleviate pain and improve the quality of life for people in more than 100 countries worldwide.
Zimmer Biomet’s Shannon operations focus on the cleaning, polishing, finishing and packaging of joint replacement components. Consumables such as gloves, grinding wheels and polishing belts are used daily and form a substantial, but unmeasurable part of the joint production unit cost. Tracking this usage was done manually through Microsoft Excel involving extensive data setup and import. It was impossible to determine the exact number of consumables used. Zimmer Biomet engaged Zing Technology to automate this labour-intensive, manual data input process because of Zing’s Microsoft SQL Server database expertise and track record of delivering portal-based solutions.
The Consumables Usage Tracker System was delivered using Agile development methodology as an intranet portal application. Components were developed using Visual Studio 2012 running against a SQL Server database. The portal includes:
Data loader importing data from core financial Oracle databases and Kanban.
Web front-end dashboard providing live usage and variance information exportable to Excel.
User and reference data maintenance functions.
Integration with JD Edwards
Zing designed a new “Consumables Usage Tracker System.” This new system:
Automates input and set-up of consumables usage data.
Eliminates manual data processing errors.
Provides access to data previously not available.
Offers a single data repository for further consumables usage pattern analysis.
”“Zing designed and delivered a robust solution which integrates well with core Zimmer Biomet systems. It has become a key part of our armoury for tracking production process input. As a result, the solution has also been rolled out to our manufacturing facility in Galway.”Christy Hannon, Senior Buyer/Planner, Zimmer Biomet.
